Rankin has created an illusion painting eyes onto the models eyelids which turns her into a human doll. The image contains a lot of neutral colours which makes the image simplistic but the eyes stand out as they are drawn on which creates the illusion of them being enlarged and 'doll like'. This is the only bright colour in the image, which diverts the viewers attention onto the abnormally large eyes. Another aspect of the image that is effective is that the top half of the model is white and the bottom half is her natural skin colour. Half of the hand is painted white whilst the other half is natural, which lines up against the box around the models head. This illusion gives off the effect that the model is very mannequin like which is effective as the message that Rankin wants to get across is questioning the ideologies of beauty and how everything today is 'glossy' and 'plastic'. This use of makeup is effective as the viewers attention s enhanced to look at this image due to the simplicity of it but there still being aspects of the image which make it stand out.

The use of the white background and pale model in this image makes it look almost like a watercolour painting on a blank canvas, which is the same technique that I want to use in my own work and will use as inspiration. The colours compliment each other well, for example the purple and blue and the use of warm colours breaks the cool toned colours. He has used darker colours where the shadows would be and lighter colours where the highlights would be which is an idea that I am also looking to use to be able to create a few different outcomes for this series. The artist has used paint drips which have been created by diluting the body paint with a lot of water to give the image a 'watercolour' effect which makes the whole image look like a painting rather than a photograph. There is emphasis around facial features defining them with sharper brush strokes, giving the photo more depth whereas still keeping the model two dimensional. It is effective that the hair is slicked back as this focuses the viewers attention onto the paint itself. The models skin is almost completely white, and this blends her into the background, which distorts her and the use of makeup makes this image look more like a painting rather than a photograph which is something that I want to try an incorporate into my own work.

In this photograph by Leal, she has used two subjects which are similar in terms of paint style but are almost opposites to each other even though the same colours have been used which is an effective way of using makeup to attract the viewers attention. The two models in the image have the same flecks and streaks of paint but the colours are painted onto different parts of their faces. The colours of paint used compliment each other and are used in a smart way due to one model having orange painted onto her lips and eyelashes and the other model having green painted onto her lips and eyelashes. This is also another way which will attract the viewers attention as the first thing you see is the contrast between the two models. The fact that the models are very close in the image and one has her hand on the other face gives us a visual sense of opposites attracting and rubbing off onto each other in day to day life and becoming close friends. Leal has also used a black background to divert all of the attention onto the models makeup and let us as an audience focus mainly on their lips and eyelashes and a bit on their shoulders, hands and parts of the face which may not be as noticeable in day to day life, creating an almost alternate universe effect which has all been achieved with UV paint and a black light.
