Katharina Jung is a photographer who uses her camera to manipulate photographs and create unearthly scenes. She takes advantage of natural landscapes to create dreamscapes and mixing surreal and fantasy elements. Katharina's images have an enchanting feel to them and they are surreal and dreamy as she channels her daydreams and her imagination into surreal photographs. Her style is a mix of daydreams and fairytales and photography allows her to create the surreal world that she would love to live in. I have chosen this photographer in relation to my topic as my idea is also to create surreal, beautiful images that look like something out of a dream.

This photograph portrays the lightness and darkness of one person. There is also another idea where the black drips can emulate blood which adds to the surrealism of the image and gives it a dark and gloomy atmosphere. Katharina Jung has made sure that the watercolour drips are exaggerated which make them stand out amongst anything else in the photograph. The lighting used is spray lighting as it makes the background seem brighter and gives the photograph more depth as the model seems further away from the background. The main focus of the photograph is the watercolour drips going down the models face which means that the rest of the photograph has to be dull in order for there to be a main focus on the photo without a lot going on. The model is also wearing dark but natural eye makeup which fits the theme of the dullness and darkness of the photo but is still very unique and eye catching.
|
This photograph also has a gloomy atmosphere because of the blood coming out the models nose and running down her mouth and neck which is the main centrepiece of the photograph. The model has no makeup on which allows the audience to focus more on the blood running down her face. Even though the photograph is in colour, there is still a dark atmosphere due to the dull background and limited colour of the photograph. There is also split lighting which adds to the sinister and dramatic mood of the photo. The model has no makeup on which makes the blood the focus of the photo. She also has messy and wet hair which adds to the gloomy effect of the photograph. The fact that the model has bright eyes makes them stand out amongst the dark background and shadows. The blood is also a deep red colour and looks like its been smudged around the teeth and onto the lips.

Caitlin Worthington's photographs make the audience feel as if they are stepping into a dream. Her photos are sometimes clean and simple yet imaginative as her images give the viewer an insight into her mind. There are many things that inspire Caitlin Worthington but mainly just day to day life is enough inspiration for her images.

In this photograph, the eyes and emotion connect with the viewer. The painted mask gives the photograph a backstory and seems as if the identity of the person is being hidden behind this painted on mask. The lighting and the black paint accentuates the colour and light in the eyes, making them the focus of the photograph as they stand out against the paint. This makes the emotion more significant and focuses the viewers attention onto the eyes. The fact that the model is covering their mouth with their hand also puts the emphasis on the eyes. The photograph is quite dark due to the background and the model filling the frame.
|
In this photograph, the two models are making eye contact with the camera which allows the viewer to see the emotion and story behind the photograph. The models both have bright blue eyes which gives the photograph a focus point as the black paint smeared onto the models cause them to look dull and also blend into the dark background. The fact that the models are looking up at the camera gives them an innocent look and so the photograph gives off a more innocent and angelic vibe which contrasts with the dark makeup smeared all over the models which causes the photo to also have a slightly gloomy feel to it. The only bright colour in this photo are the models blue eyes, and the female models hair which is a platinum blonde colour which can also add to the innocence and purity of the model.

Firstly, I created another layer so I could go back easily if I made any mistakes.
Thirdly, I applied the auto colour as I felt that photo-shop was able to give the photograph the appropriate colour balance.
I then used the dodge and burn tool to smooth over the background and get it the colour I wanted it to match the mood of the photograph. This also emphasises the model who is the main focus of the photo. The dodge and burn tool allowed me to emphasise the darker and lighter tones in the photograph.

I then adjusted the brightness and contrast to give the photograph the suitable effect.
I then used the spot healing brush tool, making sure the the brush was soft and I went over any blemishes that could distract the viewer from the purpose of the photo which was to focus on the dripping paint alone.
Lastly, I used the blur tool and made sure that it was a large and soft brush so I could blur the edges of the model and parts of the photograph such as the flyaway hairs so there was less focus on them and the models face would stand out more.
