Pierre Pellengrini is a photographer who takes photographs that have a gloomy but dreamlike mood. He uses the fog and mist to his advantage and creates photographs with an atmosphere. He further manipulates the a photograph by changing it to black and white which gives the image an emphasised gloomy atmosphere. A lot of his photographs contain a landscape that is simplistic such as the dead trees and empty fields. His photographs are very simplistic as the main focus of them is to create an atmosphere. His photographs are also distinctive due to the same black and white style that he uses.

This photograph is a very atmospheric landscape shot due to the black and white effect. It also has an eerie and gloomy mood due to the emptiness of the photo with the dead trees adding to the effect. The trees have a halo of light around them but it is very dull to keep the atmosphere of the photo looking gloomy. This photo is a good example of the kind of photographs that I would like to take because my theme is creating an atmosphere and I feel that going to deserted and lonely places will emphasise the atmosphere due to the main focus of the photographs being the natural and simplistic landscapes rather than cities, people and busy places. The dark skies contrast against the halo of light around the trees which emphasise the trees and allow the viewer to focus on them as they are the main subject of the photo.

This is another one of my favourite photographs by Pierre Pellengrini as it creates a gloomy atmosphere just like all his other photographs. The landscape is very simplistic with only a row of trees being the main focus of the photograph. The fact that the trees are in a row gives the photo depth. The trees at the back are also less defined as the trees in the front due to the mist and fog surrounding the landscape. The mist and fog allows the photographer to take advantage of this and also allows them to create a mysterious and gloomy atmosphere. The fact that the photo is in black and white further manipulates the mood and atmosphere, giving off the effect of mystery and gloominess. The photograph gives off an eerie feel due to the enhanced fog and mist surrounding the trees.

Mikko Lagerstedt is a photographer who creates an atmosphere in his photographs. He takes photographs at night meaning that he can create atmospheric photography using simplistic landscapes. He creates beautiful photographs which all have different atmospheres, rather than focusing on one particular mood to emphasise in his photographs. He uses colour, and natural landscapes to portray different moods and atmospheres while enhancing the colours to make the photographs more aesthetically pleasing.
|
This is one of my favourite photos by Mikko Lagerstedt as it fits my theme of creating an atmosphere. He has used an appropriate landscape which gives the photograph a mysterious mood due to the deserted road. The mist is also used in this photo which is at the end of the road and amongst all the trees. This is very similar to my other photographer research however, Mikko uses colour in most of his photographs but is still able to achieve the same effect of creating a gloomy and mysterious atmosphere. There is one block of colour which are the yellow lines separating the road into two lanes. The fact that this is the brightest colour in the photo and is also right in the middle of the photograph makes the photo aesthetically pleasing and focuses the viewers attention on the simplistic and appealing photo.
|
This is another one of my favourites as even though the landscape in this photo is deserted and simplistic, it gives off a different vibe compared to some of Mikko's other photos. The atmosphere that is created in this photograph seems more appealing and vibrant compared to the other photograph that was mysterious and gloomy. The fact that the trees are silhouetted, contrasts agains the vibrant sky full of stars which allows it to stand out and become the main focus of the photograph. The trees almost look like they have been painted onto a starry canvas which makes it extremely appealing for the viewer. The colours in the sky have also been enhanced adding to the calm atmosphere. There is also depth in this photograph which emphasises the appealing look and the road that splits the trees down the middle adds definition to the photo.

Barry Underwood is a photographer who uses light painting to create atmospheres in his photographs. He uses long exposure and a still landscape to get the effect of the lights to add a surreal aspect his photographs. The light trails make the photos unique as without them, the photographs would be simple landscape photo. The landscapes are simple as the main focus on the photographs are the light trails.
|
This is one of my favourite photographs by Barry Underwood as he has used light painting to create an atmosphere. The green in the photograph is harmonious as the green leaves match the lights. The lights are vibrant which contrasts against the dark and gloomy background. This style of photograph is unique as the light painting adds to the composition of the photograph which is appealing to the viewer. The light painting makes the photograph look surreal and creates an atmosphere which is my theme. I have decided to base my final pieces off Barry Underwood's work as it links to my theme of creating an atmosphere in a unique way. This photo also uses rules of composition which makes the photo look more appealing. The photographer uses vantage point and depth of field to add to the composition of the photo.
|
This is my second favourite because the photographer has decided to use different rules of composition such as depth of field and also framing the subject. This photograph has a blue tint to it which compliments the blue lights in the picture. I like the contrast between the natural and man made elements added to the photo, making it more surreal and atmospheric. This photograph has a dreamlike and angelic effect due to the blue tint it has. The background is not in focus, which gives the photograph more of a mysterious effect, adding to the atmosphere of the photo. This also means that the focus will be on the lights which re in line with the tree trunks on the ground. The fact that they are also placed in a specific way gives the whole photograph depth which also makes the photograph look more aesthetically pleasing.

I used photoshop to merge two photographs together. One was a landscape photograph and the other was from my light painting photoshoot. This was an easier way to incorporate light painting into my photos as I did not have to worry about the shutter speed during the day time.
I then selected the part of the photograph that I wanted to copy and paste.
After I placed the photograph in the position that I felt would look best, I changed the layer style to 'lighter colour' to get rid of the dark background and just keep the light in.
|
Firstly, in order to be able to copy and paste my light painting photograph into my landscape photograph, I had to unlock the layer and add a new one.
Next I pasted the photograph into the other one and changed the size of the photo, making sure I pressed shift as I dragged the photo to change the size otherwise it would distort.
Finally, I used the eraser tool to get rid of any traces of black which was the background, and I neatened up the outline of the photo to make it look like one photograph.
